Soul Taken (Mercy Thompson, #13) by Patricia Briggs

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Category: Adult
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Content: Strong language, Off page sex, Murders

The vampire Wulfe is missing. Since he’s deadly, possibly insane, and his current idea of “fun” is stalking me, some may see it as no great loss. But, warned that his disappearance might bring down the carefully constructed alliances that keep our pack safe, my mate and I must find Wulfe—and hope he’s still alive. As alive as a vampire can be, anyway.

But Wulfe isn’t the only one who has disappeared. And now there are bodies, too. Has the Harvester returned to the Tri-Cities, reaping souls with his cursed sickle? Or is he just a character from a B horror movie and our enemy is someone else?

The farther I follow Wulfe’s trail, the more twisted—and darker—the path becomes. I need to figure out what’s going on before the next body on the ground is mine.

The book I was most excited to read in August was Soul Taken and I ended up really enjoying it, which is the usual for a Patricia Briggs book. I did feel like it was slow to get going, and it felt a little off to me until at some point it clicked and I was enjoying it just like I do all the Patricia Briggs books I've read. I'm not sure what was off, other than I noticed a few sentences that were awkwardly structured, and I had to go back and reread them.

This book didn't do much to advance the plot of the series, but it did give more development for a few of the characters, which I enjoyed. I have to say though, poor Stefan always seems to end up in the same sorts of predicaments. I knew going in that this book was about the vampires from the book description, but it went differently than I expected. I feel like it successfully distracted me with some things for a while in order to surprise me with something I should have seen coming from a mile away.

I was frustrated that some things are left hanging at the end of this book, particularly with one character whom I would like to see get their comeuppance. As always, I'm looking forward to next year, when I get to read another book by this author.
